Colorado Mesa holds on to victory over Western
GUNNISON - Colorado Mesa was able to pick up a key first down to run out the clock and hold on to defeat Western State 23-20 at the Mountaineer Bowl.
Mesa wide receiver Tanner Whaley picked up 26 yards on a reverse to get a first down and run out the clock after Western State scored a touchdown with 2:31 left.
Mesa redshirt freshman Jake Cimolino rushed for 139 yards and two touchdowns. The Mavericks (3-6, 2-5 RMAC) rushed for 294 yards and had 408 in total offense.
