Colorado pro rodeo finals at Mesa County Fairgrounds this weekend

A number of local rodeo pros will compete in the year’s final Colorado Professional Rodeo Association championship rodeo this weekend.

The event is scheduled for today through Sunday at the Mesa County Fairgrounds and features more than 15 competitors from Mesa, Delta and Garfield counties. Action begins at 7 p.m. today and Saturday, and Sunday’s action begins at 1 p.m.

Local cowboy Hank Bounds said the action will be exciting because it will determine the overall season champion in nine events.

“(Fans) can expect the top cowboys from our state circuit, and it will be exciting because they will all be going for the year-end title,” he said.

Action from each event will take place all three days, with the top 12 competitors from the season competing for the year-end title. Events include bareback riding, steer wrestling, tie-down roping, breakaway roping, saddle bronc riding, mixed team roping, open team roping, ladies barrel racing and bull riding.

The year-end title will be determined by the overall points from the season.

Individual titles from each event will also be awarded at the rodeo after the third round. Every participant will compete in all three rounds with the combined scores and times determining the champion.

Competitors from around the state as well as Wyoming, New Mexico and Nebraska are scheduled to be at the event.

The competitors have battled for more than 25 events during the season, and it will come down to this weekend to see who will win the year-end title and money for each event.

“This is going to be a top competition. You’re going to have the best of the best and the best stock, so it will be exciting,” Bounds said.

Tickets for the event are per day with reserve seating at $15, and $12 for adults (18 and up), $9 for ages 7 to 17, and kids ages 6 and under get in free.
