Cougars’ fourth-quarter surge too much for GJ
Grand Junction tried, but couldn’t hold on.
The Cherokee Trail boys basketball team rallied Friday night to defeat the Tigers 51-50 in the ThunderRidge Tip-Off Classic in Highlands Ranch.
Grand Junction led 28-19 at halftime and 40-34 after three quarters. The Cougars outscored Grand Junction 17-10 in the fourth quarter.
Nate Yanez and Casey Burns each scored 13 points to lead Grand Junction (3-3). Zach Kiel added 11.
Cherokee Trail had three players scored in double figures, led by Darian Jackson and Scott Matcher with 11 each.
Pueblo South 54, Fruita Monument 46: The Colts pulled away in the second half, outscoring Fruita 30-18 in the Ralston Valley Roundup tournament. The Wildcats (2-3) led 28-24 at halftime.
Drew Bridges led the Wildcats with 29 points. Dominic Bregar led Pueblo South with 19 points.
Montrose 67, Moffat County 44: The Indians broke open a close game in the second quarter and pulled away for the victory in the Steamboat Springs tournament.
Paonia 69, Olathe 62: The Eagles scored 28 points in the fourth quarter to rally for the victory. Kacey Kropp led Paonia with 20 points. Adrian Penny had 19. Taylor Carlson led Olathe with 16.
Grand Valley 41, Hayden 38: Matt Donello and Omar Melendrez each scored 11 points to lead the Cardinals to a semifinal victory in the Meeker Shootout.
Olathe 48, Paonia 42: The Pirates jumped to a 18-4 lead after the first quarter and survived a Paonia rally for the victory. Morgan Stanberry led Olathe (2-0) with 14 points. Chelsey Reed scored 11 for Paonia (2-1).
Central/Palisade 633-617, Salida, Gunnison 551/604: Teddy Hayes won two evens (50-yard freestyle, 100 backstroke) and set a Gunnison pool record in the 100 backstroke in 1:12.75 to lead the Wardogs. Lilly Poush took first in diving (153.5 points).
Central at Wasatch Duals: The Warriors went 1-2 on the first day of the Wasatch Intermountain Dual tournament in Heber City, Utah. Central defeated Lone Peak 55-18, but lost to Wasatch 55-12 and Mountain Crest 39-36.
Olathe 38, Paonia 32: Kyle Piatt sealed the Pirates’ victory in his first match of the season, pinning Kyler Boar in 22 seconds at 171 pounds. Trenton Piatt recorded Olathe’s other pinfall victory at 103 pounds.
Hayden 27, Grand Valley 24: The Cardinals’ Cody Pfau (103), Emelio Ruelas (145) and David Witt (160) pinned their opponents, but Hayden had two pins and two decisions for the team victory.
