CSU-Pueblo wins RMAC tournament title

CSU-Pueblo held off a Colorado Mesa rally to win the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference tournament title with a 7-5 victory at Suplizio Field.

The ThunderWolves (32-20) clinch the RMAC automatic qualifier berth for the NCAA Division II Tournament in the South Central Region. Colorado Mesa (44-9), ranked second in the last regional poll, will have to get in with one of three at-large bids.

CSU-Pueblo pitcher Jeremiah Struble limited the Mavericks to five runs (three earned) on five hits in 6 2/3 innings for the victory. Mike Farbizio didn’t allow a run in 2 1/3 innings for the save.

The ThunderWolves strung together six hits to score five runs in the second inning to take a 5-2 lead. They added a run in the third for a 6-2 lead.

Colorado Mesa cut the lead to one run in the seventh inning when two runs scored on a CSU-Pueblo error.

The Mavericks had two runners on and no outs in the eighth, but CSU-Pueblo second baseman Chase Lacomb caught a line drive for an out and doubled up a runner for two outs. Mitch Corwin flew out to end the inning.

Cody Lahman took the loss for Mesa. He allowed five runs on six hits in 1 2/3 innings. Aaron Corwin pitched 6 1/3 innings in relief to keep Mesa in it. He allowed two runs on five hits and struck out 10.

Colorado Mesa forced a rematch with a 6-1 victory over the ThunderWolves earlier Sunday.

Joey Danner limited CSU-Pueblo to one run on 10 hits and struck out seven in a complete game.

Nate Robertson was 1 for 3 with a two-run home run. Braden Box was 4 for 5 with one RBI, Austin Kaiser drove in one run and Garrett Carpenter had a sacrifice fly.

The NCAA will announce the tournament field at 8 tonight.
