CSU-Pueblo men hold on to defeat Montana Western
CSU-Pueblo led by one point, 82-81, with one minute to play Saturday in Colorado Mesa’s Holiday Inn-Airport Thanksgiving Classic.
The ThunderWolves put the ball in point guard Nate Tigner’s hands.
Tigner let the ball roll past midcourt, then snatched it up and found an open seam on the left side of the lane. With 45.9 seconds left, he hit a driving layup and was fouled. The free throw gave CSU-Pueblo the cushion it needed on the way to an 87-81 win over Montana Western.
The Bulldogs’ Kurtis Parsons was called for an illegal screen, turning the ball back to the ThunderWolves, on the ensuing possession, then CSU-Pueblo’s Wendell Lee blocked Montana Western’s final shot. CSU-Pueblo hit two of four free throws in the final seconds to seal it.
Matt Rosenbaum led CSU-Pueblo (2-1) with 20 points, Devonte Malcom added 18, Lee 12 and Jed Knafelc 11.
Maazin Butler had 28 points for Montana Western (6-5).
Colorado Mesa wraps up the three-day tournament by playing CSU-Pueblo at 7 tonight at Brownson Arena.
Montana Western 71, Western State 61: Jenna Banks and McCall Hasquet scored 17 points each and Sammy Bignell added 11 for the Bulldogs, who scored 26 points off 23 Western State turnovers to go 1-1 in the tournament.
