D51 graduation rate surpasses state at 74 percent for class of 2010

School District 51’s class of 2010 had a 74 percent graduation rate, compared to 71.8 percent the year before.

The district surpassed Colorado’s average graduation rate of 72.4 percent in spring 2010, which was up 1.7 percentage points from the class of 2009.

Fruita Monument High School had the highest graduation rate in 2010, 87.6 percent, followed by 83.3 percent for home-schooled Mesa Valley Vision Home and Community Program students, 77.8 percent at Grand Junction High School, 77.4 percent at Central High School, 75.2 percent at Palisade High School, and 26.2 percent at R-5 High School.

The rates were calculated using a new state formula that includes only students who completed high school in four years in the graduation rate. In the past, students who did not complete high school within four years were added to the next class’ cohort if they graduated within five years. The state will release graduation rates for students who graduated within four or five years next year and within four, five or six years the year after that, but this year released only four-year graduation rates.
