Dahl selected as top Rookie league player by Baseball America

David Dahl’s awards shelf has another trophy after the GJ Rockies’ outfielder was selected the Rookie player of the year by Baseball America.

David Dahl has a few more days to relax at home in Alabama before he joins the Colorado Rockies Instructional League team in Scottsdale, Ariz.

He’ll go there as the Rookie player of the year, as selected by Baseball America.

The baseball publication announced its minor league all-star teams Friday in all classifications, from Rookie to Triple-A baseball (baseballamerica.com), with two Grand Junction Rockies players making the Rookie list.

Dahl, who hit .379 to win the Pioneer League batting title, made the Rookie team as the center fielder and was selected the player of the year from among the four Rookie leagues — Pioneer, Arizona, Appalachian and Gulf Coast. He had 106 hits, 22 doubles, 10 triples and nine home runs and made only four errors in 67 games during the regular season, most playing center field. In three playoff games, Dahl hit .429, with one double and three RBI and scored four runs.

Eddie Butler, who went 7-1 with a 2.13 ERA for the Rockies this summer, made the five-man pitching staff. Butler had 55 strikeouts and 13 walks in 13 games, pitching 67 2/3 innings in the regular season. He threw six innings in the Rockies’ first playoff game, allowing two runs on six hits and striking out six. He did not get the decision in the Rockies’ 4-3 loss in 11 innings.

Sam Selman, the Pioneer League pitcher of the year from Idaho Falls, was selected Baseball America’s Rookie pitcher of the year.

Butler will also be in Scottsdale for Instructional League, one of more than two dozen prospects who played in Grand Junction to get that assignment.

Dahl, Butler and Selman were the only players from the Pioneer League team to be tabbed by the publication.

In Class A Advanced, outfielder Kyle Parker of the Rockies’ affiliate in Modesto, Calif., made the team, with catcher Will Swanner of Asheville, N.C., making the Class A list.

Dahl is ranked as the Rockies’ No. 5 prospect on the club’s website; Parker is No. 7 and Swanner No. 9.
