David Dahl grew up an Atlanta Braves fan, but that’s changing now.

After his visit to Denver for a workout with the Colorado Rockies a week before the Major League Baseball draft, Dahl has another favorite.

“When I went to the workout in Colorado before the draft, I fell in love with Denver,” Dahl said. “It’s a nice place. I liked the staff. Everybody I met, I really liked a lot.

“It’s a dream come true. I’m blessed and honored, especially to go to an organization like the Rockies. Hopefully I can move up as quick as possible and work hard every day.”

Dahl is the second outfielder the Rockies selected with their first overall pick in the past three years and first high school outfielder they have selected with their first overall pick. The Rockies selected Kyle Parker out of Clemson in the first round in 2010.

Dahl, 18, hit .412 with 11 doubles, three triples, three home runs, 17 RBI and 18 stolen bases in the spring at Oak Mountain High School in Birmingham, Ala.

Dahl is regarded as a five-tool player — hitting for average, hitting for power, base running skills and speed, throwing ability and fielding ability — but he will have to adjust to playing in dry, thin air.

It won’t be a problem offensively, but it will be different defensively.

“I want to work on everything. There’s always something to get better at,” Dahl said. “I want to read fly balls better, make sure I get better jumps (on fly balls). The ball kept carrying and carrying during the workout (at Coors Field prior to the draft).”

Dahl is rated as the 12th-best prospect in the 2012 draft and the top prospect in the state of Alabama by Baseball America. He is rated the third-best outfield prospect and fifth-best position player by Baseball America.
