Demons keep Odneal in check for win

After a close first quarter Saturday, the Glenwood Springs girls basketball team locked in its defense and shut down Palisade 58-48.

The Demons took an early 7-6 lead but the Bulldogs hopped on the backs of their senior combination of Holly Odneal and point guard Sarah Hays. The two scored all 16 of the
Bulldogs’ points, with Hays feeding the ball insideto Odneal at every opportunity. Odneal knocked down several jumpers inside the key and the Bulldogs took a 12-7 lead. The Demons battled back, nailing several 3-pointers and trailed the Bulldogs 16-15 at the end of the first quarter.

The Demons focused their defensive attack on Odneal and shut down the center for the rest of the game. With Odneal held in check, the Bulldogs were limited offensively and were outscored 19-6 in the second quarter.

Glenwood’s Katrina Selsor scored a game-high 20 points and had the highlight of the game with two minutes left in the first half.

With Odneal sticking right with her, Selsor set up outside the key with the ball. She faked left to create space and drove right. The fake didn’t shake Odneal until Selsor threw in a spin-move back to her left, cutting through a double team. She hit an up-and-under shot and added the free throw after being fouled for a 34-22 lead.

Although the Bulldogs have yet to win, Gunther is looking at the bright side.

“They’re not hanging their heads, and they’re really positive,” Gunther said.

“If we can keep reaching these goals that we are, then that’s gonna be one step in the right direction.”

Gunther and the Bulldogs will try to land in the win column for the first time this weekend, when they travel to Steamboat Springs and Moffat County.
