Diaz, Jahnke lift GJ past Montrose
Arrianna Diaz hit two home runs, including a grand slam, and Elisha Jahnke threw a three-hit shutout as Grand Junction High School opened Southwestern League softball with a 9-0 victory Tuesday over Montrose.
Diaz hit a solo home run in the first inning, and she capped the Tigers’ scoring with the grand slam in the bottom of the sixth.
Jahnke struck out five batters and walked two, and Grand Junction coach Adam Diaz said the Tigers played stellar defense behind her.
“Defensively we were on it,” he said. “The girls played great defense. We gave them no extra outs, no extra runs. ... We were just very stingy.”
Morgan Zanski and Marisa Arrietta collected two hits apiece for Grand Junction (5-1, 1-0 SWL).
Palisade 5, Delta 1: Danica DeLahoz blanked Delta over the final six frames, scattering two hits and striking out nine, for Palisade (2-4, 2-0 Western Slope League).
Trysta Ball, Sierra Clark and Trenna Morgan each had two hits to lead the Bulldogs’ 10-hit attack. Both of Clark’s hits were doubles.
Palisade coach Nicole Zuniga said the Bulldogs hit the ball well, but the score didn’t reflect it.
“A lot of the balls that were hit really hard didn’t fall,” she said. “When those start falling, we’ll score a lot more runs.”
Glenwood Springs defeated Grand Junction 4-0 in a nonleague boys soccer game Tuesday night. The Demons led 2-0 at the half.
Grand Junction dropped to 0-2 on the season.
