District tournaments to determine JUCO berths chugging along
Arizona Western outlasted Central Arizona 7-6 on Saturday to win the Region 1 championship and the right to host the NJCAA Western District playoffs.
The College of Southern Nevada and Trinidad State won their respective regions and play in Yuma starting Thursday. Central Arizona will also be in the four-team field trying to qualify for the Alpine Bank Junior College World Series.
Southern Nevada knocked off Salt Lake Community College 10-2 on Saturday in Region 18, and Trinidad blasted Western Nebraska 15-1 in the Region 9 title game.
Several regions have dealt with rain, but they’re closing in on determining district qualifiers throughout the country, all of whom will try to join top-ranked Chipola College (Florida), which won the Gulf District last week.
Southwestern District: In Lubbock, Texas, No. 11 Odessa, the top seed from the West, was upset by No. 16 Grayson County College 16-9. Sixth-ranked McLennan, the top seed from the North, was playing Weatherford in a winners’ bracket game late Saturday.
Southern District: No. 15 San Jacinto College-North, Panola, Angelina and Navarro all won first-round games Saturday in Grand Prairie, Texas.
Central District: No. 14 Johnson County upended third-ranked Hutchinson 14-8 to join Cowley County in the winners’ bracket, both at 2-0. They play this afternoon to advance to the championship game. Hutchinson plays Fort Scott and Kansas City faces Neosho in elimination games. The title game in Wichita, Kansas, is Monday.
Southeastern District: Ozark, Alabama, was also hit with rain, but teams played late at night Friday and Saturday to try to stay on schedule. Southern Union and Central Alabama were both eliminated, with Alabama Southern playing No. 5 Chattahoochee Valley late Saturday night. No. 7 Wallace State, the top seed out of the North Division, won its opener 6-4 over Snead State.
East Central District: Georgia Highlands and East Georgia advanced out of Georgia and No. 4 Dyersburg State and Columbia State will represent Tennessee in the East Central tournament at Dyersburg State.
Eastern District: Rain delayed the Region 20 tournament at Hagerstown, Maryland, which begins today. Florence Darlington Tech won Region 10 and will move on to the district playoffs along with the District 15 champion out of New York.
Northern District: No. 8 Iowa Western and Indian Hills play today in Region 11, with the Reivers needing to win twice to return to the district playoffs. Wabash Valley and Kaskaskia play in the Region 24 title game today, with the winner hosting the district playoffs, which also includes Region 4, where Triton plays South Suburban in today’s title game.
South Central: Second-ranked Crowder College (Missouri) is in the Region 16 title game today against either Mineral Area or Jefferson College, with Delgado Community College (Louisiana) winning Region 23. Connors State is 2-1 and Seminole State 2-0 in the Region 2 tournament in Oklahoma.
