District 51 employees losing 2 days pay in budget cut plan

All School District 51 employees will lose two days in their 2010-11 contracts in an effort to help balance next year’s budget.

Employees will get the same amount of pay for each day on the job, but may earn less than the previous year because of losing two days. For teachers, those days will include an in-service that was scheduled for Aug. 16 and one school day at the end of the year. That means the last day of school for students next spring will be May 27, instead of May 31, as originally planned.

The school board got a preliminary look at the 2010-11 budget at its meeting Tuesday evening. The budget has been balanced, Superintendent Steve Schultz said, following $10.56 million in reductions. The district expects to lose $8 million from the previous year in state revenue and expects to lose an additional $1.2 million in funding due to an anticipated decrease in enrollment.

Those cuts include:

$3.8 million for reductions to operations and administration, including building budget reductions, reducing extended contracts and investments in insurance in capital reserve and insurance funds, and transferring some costs out of the general fund.

$2.5 million for not increasing how much employees are paid per day.

$2 million for program changes, including reductions to athletics, Glade Park School and Mesa Valley Vision School.

$1.89 million for not replacing the equivalent of 46 full-time employees.

$1.6 million for having 102 employees take an early retirement offer.

$1.25 million for cutting two days from each employees’ contract.

The 2010-11 general fund will have revenue and expenditure totals of $146.5 million — $8 million less than the 2009-10 general fund had.
