‘Dogs blank Huskies on soccer field
Flannery Davis and Audrey Rose Kachin scored second-half goals Saturday as Palisade defeated Battle Mountain 2-0 at Long Family Memorial Park.
Palisade (7-5, 6-3 WSL) got eight saves from Katie Dunn.
Hunter Finger went 2 for 3 with two RBI and two doubles as Rifle defeated Gunnison 12-2 in the first game of a doubleheader.
Finger also pitched 5 1/3 innings and struck out eight before leaving the game with an elbow injury.
In the second game, an 8-4 Gunnison win, Rifle (15-2) managed only four hits.
Meredith Soychak improved her record at No. 2 singles to 8-2 with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Durango’s Ellen Southworth.
Fruita, 8-2 in duals, defeated Durango 6-1.
Soychak’s sister, Jaque Soychak, improved her doubles record to 9-1 as she and McKenna Griffiths defeated Claire Oschner and Jamie Wanzek at No. 2 doubles, 2-6, 6-4, 6-3.
Paul Dohm scored four goals and Kris States added three as nine Grand Junction players scored in the Tigers’ 14-2 win over Telluride.
Kolten Flick had nine saves for Grand Junction (9-5).
TRACK AND FIELD
Rifle won three individual events and three relays to run away with the boys title at the Montrose Invitational.
Taylor Webb won the boys 110-meter hurdles (15.66 seconds) and Ryan Moeller won the 100 dash (11.28).
Moeller also won the 400 (51.01), with teammate Aaron Wagler right behind (51.26). The Bears also won the 400, 800 and 1,600 relays, scoring 115 team points to Delta’s 102.
In the girls meet, Paonia’s Lindsay Russell won the 200-meter dash (26.72) and Brooklynd Erickson the long jump (16 feet, 3 1/2 inches) and the Eagles won the 400 and 1,600 relays to score 119 points and win the title.
Rifle’s Joey Kuheim won the shot put and discus, and Clarissa Whiting and her sister, Cleo, went 1-2 for Delta in the 1,600 run.
Natalie Anderson of Hotchkiss won the 3,200 meters in 11:44.5, with the next-fastest runner coming in at just over 13 minutes.
