Don Meyer will present Servant Leadership Tour at Mesa

Don Meyer gave a memorable speech at the Alpine Bank Junior College World Series banquet a little more than a year ago.

The former Northern State (S.D.) University men’s basketball coach, who was involved in a life-threatening car accident in 2008, is coming back to Grand Junction to speak again.

Meyer will present his Servant Leadership Tour on Sept. 5 at the CMU University Center ballroom from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Cost is $75 and includes lunch and related materials.

To register or request more information, call 970-248-1908 or email CMU Associate Athletic Director Kris Mort at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).

JUCO World Series Chairman Jamie Hamilton, a former Mesa athletic director, arranged the course with Mort.

“Anytime you have an opportunity to bring in a quality speaker, we want to do it,” Mort said.

The course is open to the public. School teachers and coaches can get one continuous-education hour for it, Mort said. The CMU University Center ballroom seats up to 500 people.

According to the syllabus, the course takes the principles of athletic coaching, as inspired and presented by Meyer, and applies them to business and organizational structures.
Meyer was in a head-on car accident, witnessed by his players, in September 2008. His lower left leg had to be amputated as a result of the accident. During surgery, doctors discovered inoperable cancer.

He returned to the sidelines for two more seasons before he retired as one of the winningest coaches in NCAA history with 923 victories. He led Northern State (S.D.) University to five appearances — two consecutive — in the NCAA Division II tournament.

Meyer has received national recognition for his career and now travels the country presenting leadership seminars and motivational talks. His story is the subject of the best-selling book “How Lucky You Can Be” by Buster Olney, and it is being made into a motion picture.
