Drivers challenge Lands End
By ALLEN GEMAEHLICH
A unique form of racing comes to the Grand Valley this weekend.
The Lands End Hill Climb takes place today and Sunday on Lands End Road on Grand Mesa.
Tickets are available at the gate for $12. Children 12-under are free. To get to Lands End Road, take U.S. Highway 50 south to Kannah Creek Road and continue east to Lands End Road.
The races begin at 8 a.m. today and 9 a.m. on Sunday. The road will be closed during the race, but will open after the classes complete the first run and after the races are done for the day.
This year’s event has an added class — rock racers, with nearly two dozen dune buggy vehicles expected to compete.
The rock racers class is one of four King of the Hammers qualifying races. The top five finishers who have not already qualified for the King of the Hammers race will qualify for the 2010 desert and rock-crawling off-road race in Johnson Valley, Calif.
Local drivers Larry Thompson and Mike Magee will compete in the Sportsman Class. Other racers include Rally All-Wheel Drive X Games competitors Nathan and Brandye Conley and 18-time Pikes Peak International Hill Climb Super Stock Truck champion Leonard Vahsholtz.
Lands End Hill Climb is the third of four races in the Colorado Hill Climb Association.
