Dunn gives Palisade overtime victory over Glenwood Springs

Sean Dunn scored on a 6-yard run in overtime Friday to give the Palisade High School football team a 19-16 victory at Glenwood Springs.

Jesse Brannon caught a 39-yard touchdown pass from Jordan Salazar in the second quarter, but the Bulldogs drove the field two other times in the first half without scoring.

Two Palisade defensive penalties set up Glenwood’s first score, an 11-yard Luke Jacob run, with 1:21 remaining in the first half.

Palisade scored on a 1-yard Dunn run with 3:56 remaining in regulation. Leading 16-13, Palisade coach John Arledge elected to go for two with the conference tiebreaker in mind.

Since Delta defeated Palisade 10-6, Arledge knew if Palisade, Glenwood and Delta finished in a three-way tie for second after next week, the Bulldogs needed to defeat the Demons by five or more points in order to get the higher seed.

The conversion run attempt failed. Palisade then attempted an onside kick, which the Demons recovered. Glenwood drove to the Palisade 13, where Clay Hawkins booted a 30-yard field goal with 36 second remaining to send the game into overtime.

A snap over the head of the quarterback on Glenwood’s first possession in overtime forced the Demons to kick a field goal.

Palisade then scored on Dunn’s run during its overtime possession to take the victory.

“It was a great game,” Arledge said, giving credit to his offensive line.

Ronald Kuntz rushed for 85 yards for Palisade (5-4, 5-2 Western Slope Conference).

Glenwood (5-3, 5-1) plays Steamboat Springs at home next week for the conference title. Palisade plays Rifle at Stocker Stadium on Thursday to close out its regular season.

Montrose 42, Fruita Monument 13: The Indians (7-1, 2-0 Southwestern Conference) handed the Wildcats their fifth consecutive loss.

Fruita Monument (2-6, 0-4) broke a four-game scoreless streak with a touchdown in the first half.

Montrose travels to Stocker on Friday to face Grand Junction.

Fruita Monument closes out its regular season with its third straight road game next Saturday in Fort Collins against Poudre.
