Durango win over Grand Junction tightens up SWL soccer standings
The Durango High School boys soccer team took a 1-0 lead in first half and upped the lead with two second-half goals to beat Grand Junction 3-0 on Saturday.
The Demons’ win avenged an 1-0 overtime loss earlier this season.
The Tigers (11-2, 5-1 Southwestern League) had won six straight and can still clinch the league championship outright with victories at Montrose on Tuesday and at Central on Oct. 18.
Eli Fenton scored on a penalty kick, and Lance Townsend and Max Wilson added goals for the Demons (8-2-2, 4-1-1), who can win their fifth consecutive league championship with wins in their final two matches and a loss by Grand Junction.
Summit 10, Palisade 0: The Tigers jumped to a 6-0 lead in the first half to rout the Bulldogs (0-12, 0-9 4A Western Slope League).
Plateau Valley was limited to 25 yards of total offense by West Grand, which cruised to a 46-0 victory in Collbran. Adrian Chamorro completed 6 of 11 passes for 46 yards to lead the Cowboys (2-5, 0-2 Northwest Conference).
A third-place finish from Grand Junction’s Greyson Gehl helped the Tigers boys to a second-place finish in the team standings of the Chris Severy Invitational in Aspen.
Gehl’s time of 20 minutes, 7 second was a little more than one minute off the winning time of Jaden Evans of Telluride (19:00.8).
Grand Junction freshman Mandy Moran (23:37.3) placed third in the girls race with Rifle’s Sarah Wagler winning in a time of 22:11.1. Aspen’s boys and girls teams each won team titles.
Palisade cruised to a 25-13, 25-13, 25-17 win at Summit in Frisco to remain in second place in the Class 4A Western Slope League standings.
The Bulldogs (10-5, 7-1 WSL) got six aces and 18 digs from Emily Tucker and 10 kills from Alexandra MacAskill. Reese Norton added 27 assists.
Palisade will face league-leading Eagle Valley on the road Thursday.
Montrose 3, Montezuma-Cortez 0: Katie Sherwood had 13 kills and two aces and Victoria Martinez added 17 digs to pace the Indians (7-8) to a 25-12, 25-18, 25-10 win.
Plateau Valley 3, North Park 1: The Cowboys (5-7, 2-6 2A/1A WSL) won for the fifth time in six matches with their 23-25, 25-21, 25-18, 25-17 win over the Wildcats.
Durango 3, Central 0: The Demons (10-3, 4-0 SWL) kept pace with Fruita Monument in the league standings with their 25-19, 25-20, 25-20 victory over Central (2-13, 1-5).
