Eagles land No. 5 seed in Class 2A baseball playoffs
Paonia, fresh off winning its district Saturday, received a No. 5 seed Sunday when the Class 2A baseball playoff pairings were announced by the Colorado High School Activities Association.
The field of 16 teams is broken into four regions, and the highest seed in each region hosts a four-team regional May 18.
In Paonia’s case, the Eagles are going to Parker, where fourth-seeded Lutheran High School is the Region 2 host. Lutheran (14-7) will play No. 13 Peyton (16-5) at 10 a.m., and Paonia (16-5) will play No. 12 Holyoke (18-3) at 12:30 p.m. The winners will play in the regional final at 3 p.m.
Hotchkiss, whom Paonia defeated 11-1 in their district final, received the No. 16 seed. The Bulldogs (15-7) will travel to No. 1 seed Rye (18-1) and play the Thunderbolts in a Region 1 semifinal at 10 a.m. In the other semifinal, No. 8 Sargent (16-4) plays No. 9 Yuma (18-3) at 12:30 p.m. The final follows at 3 p.m.
The four regional champions advance to the Class 2A semifinals May 25 at All-Star Park in Lakewood, where games will be played at 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., followed by the state championship game at 3 p.m.
