Emerson, Berg power ‘Cats to 4th tourney title
Fruita Monument High School claimed two of the top four spots individually Wednesday to win its fourth boys golf tournament of the season.
The Wildcats totaled 227 strokes, led by Hunter Emerson’s second-place 73, as they edged Rifle by one stroke at the Moffat County Invitational.
Will Berg added a 75 for Fruita Monument, and teammate Troy Dangler rounded out the team score with a 79.
Wildcats coach Dave Fox praised Emerson for the approach he took at par-72 Yampa Valley Golf Course on what he called a beautiful day, “a day when kids could score.” Emerson, Fox said, can hit the ball a mile, but Fox has been working with him to slow down a bit and play with more control.
“He did a great job of that today,” Fox said, adding Emerson had four birdies on the front nine.
Fox said Berg was his consistent self, overcoming a double-bogey on his first hole of the day.
Rifle’s Triston Quigley tied Emerson for second, and Danny Bartels added a 76 for the Bears.
Delta made a solid showing in the 12-team field, finishing fourth with 240 strokes on the strength of Keaton Reiher’s 75 and Tyler Garcia’s 76.
Greg Gibson led Grand Junction with a 76, and Preston Grandbouche paced Central with a 77 as their teams finished sixth and seventh, respectively.
