Fighters ready for Cage Wars XII at Mesa
Mixed martial arts is back at Colorado Mesa University.
Cage Wars XII is Saturday at Brownson Arena. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and fights start at 7 p.m.
Tickets are $30 general admission and $40 reserved seating and are available at the door, 8th Street Gym (1100 Pitkin) and the Grand Junction Harley Davidson (2747 Crossroads Blvd).
CMU students with a CMU identification can get $20 general admission tickets.
It is the second of four fights planned for this year at CMU. The second is scheduled for late August to early September.
Saturday’s fights feature Brandon Crespin, a Palisade High School and Mesa State College graduate, taking on Chris Gates at 170 pounds in the co-main event.
Gates fights out of Wanderlei Silva’s gym in Las Vegas.
The main event features Jeff Barney and Billy Martin at 165 pounds.
Martin, from Wyoming, has been underestimated in his career, said fight promoter and Bush Cree Promotions owner Alex Trottier.
“Some people think because he’s coming from Wyoming he doesn’t have any skills,” Trottier said. “He has good all-around game.”
Ten fights are scheduled, including a 170-pound championship belt fight between the winners of Cory Bendetti-Kyle Dunn and Tanner Ellenberger-Ismael Gaoma.
Trottier, who moved to Grand Junction in 1992, said $6,000, as well as half of the money from CMU student tickets, will go back to the CMU athletic programs.
“It just gives me an opportunity to do something,” Trottier said.
