Fire FC wins Colorado State Cup

The Fire FC Premier ‘97 girls team from the Grand Junction Soccer Club made history Sunday, overcoming a scoreless first half to beat Nike Rush 1-0 in the Colorado State Cup championship game.

“At the half I told the team that we were playing well and the scoring opportunity would come,” Fire coach Alex Chaffetz said.

With 18 minutes left, the opportunity came off the foot of Leah Swander, who hit a shot from 18 yards out for the only goal of the game.

The Fire’s success came largely from the defensive side.

“We weren’t going for style points,” Chaffetz said. “Tactically, this was probably the best team we’ve played.”

Nike Rush was able to control possession for the majority of the game and used an offensive press to get plenty of shots on Fire goalie Elie Borszich.

Borszich finished with 12 saves and was selected the tournament’s Most Valuable Player.

Chaffetz left the field proud of his team for not only winning, but for keeping its composure after the goal.

The Fire continues its season at the Far West Regional tournament June 21-27 in Albuquerque, N.M.
