Five freshmen place for Mavs in wrestling tournament
Five Mesa State College freshman wrestlers placed Saturday in the University of Wyoming’s Cowboy Open amateur division in Laramie, Wyo.
James Martinez (149 pounds) and Dylan Granard (165) took second place. Jordan Passehl (197) placed third, Jake Goddard (174) and Clay Flot (125) finished fourth.
“The kids wrestled well,” Mesa State coach Chuck Pipher said. “We had a lot of guys go deep into the tournament. We saw a lot of good things.”
The Wyoming Open consisted of an elite division for returning varsity wrestlers and an amateur division for freshmen and redshirt freshmen.
Mesa State senior Shane Miller (197) won two matches in the elite division and finished one win shy of placing in the top four. Rhett Breed (149) and Trevor Donarski (149) were 0-2.
Former Nucla High School three-time state champion and University of Nebraska wrestler Tucker Lane won the heavyweight elite division title with a 4-0 decision over Nebraska-Kearney’s Ben Hohensee.
Mesa State wrestles in the University of Northern Colorado Old Chicago Open on Saturday.
