Flaherty has stellar debut in CMU win

Mitch Flaherty scored three goals in his first college men’s lacrosse game to lead Colorado Mesa to an 11-5 victory over Adams State on Saturday afternoon at Walker Field.

Eight other players scored one goal for the Mavericks (1-0) in their season opener. Goalie Brad Brandenburg had 12 saves.

Michael Beimford had three assists to go with one goal. Daniel Caddoo and David Solomon each had two assists and one goal.

Women’s Lacrosse

Ashley Eickhoff, Coryann Ledford and Allie Henderson scored three goals apiece in the Mavericks’ 15-7 victory at Adams State, netting their first win of the spring.

Mesa (1-1, 1-1 RMAC) led 8-4 at halftime and put the game away with three straight goals in a 4½-minute span of the second half after the teams exchanged goals.

In the first half, CMU scored two goals with a one-player advantage, one by Keri Kopchik for a 4-2 lead with 15:19 to play, and the other by Henderson for an 8-3 lead with 6:50 on the clock.

Women’s Tennis

One day after losing 7-2 to Weber State, Colorado Mesa nearly pulled off an upset of the Division I team Saturday, losing 5-4.

The Mavericks won the No. 3 doubles match, but dropped two tiebreakers at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles.

Kaylee Davis moved into the No. 1 singles slot after playing No. 3 on Friday and won when Weber State’s Agata Bachanek retired in the second set with a knee injury.

Bachanek won the first set 6-4, but Davis was leading 3-1 in the second.

Rachel McLaughlin won 6-4, 2-6, 6-2 at No. 4 singles over Weber State’s Nittaya Phonharath, and freshman Katie Kirby got the Mavericks’ other win, 4-6, 7-5 (10-4) at No. 5 singles.
