Flat Mavs fall to T-Wolves in RMAC tournament

The tables turned on the Colorado Mesa University baseball team.

CSU-Pueblo did to Colorado Mesa on Thursday what the Mavericks did to Colorado Mines on Wednesday. The RMAC tournament host ThunderWolves, facing elimination, defeated Mesa 16-5 at Rawlings Field in Pueblo.

“We weren’t dialed in today,” CMU coach Chris Hanks said. “We’re doing something wrong as coaches. Too many guys got exposed that weren’t ready to pitch or play and they got found.”

The loss puts Mesa’s hopes of hosting the NCAA Central Regional tournament in jeopardy.

“Hosting a regional is the least of our concerns,” Hanks said. “We don’t want to take a ballclub playing like this to regionals. We’ll get embarrassed. We’ve got to get ready to play.”

The ThunderWolves (29-23) jumped on Mesa starter Nolan Snell in the second inning. They took advantage of a hit batter and an error to score eight runs for an 8-1 lead.

Snell was pulled before Mesa (39-13) could stop the damage. The junior right-hander (9-2) allowed five runs (three earned) on three hits and took the loss.

“We had a bunch of pitchers throwing down the middle and not executing pitches,” Hanks said.

Tim Moore relieved Snell, but gave up a two-run home run in the inning. He allowed five runs (all earned) on six hits in 1 1/3 innings.

Dakota Behr, Jeremy Ortiz and Kris Carlson pitched the remaining 5 1/3 innings. Behr went three, giving up a three-run home run in the sixth after the Mavs cut the lead to five.

“It snowballed fast and we couldn’t get it stopped,” Hanks said. “At that point we needed a guy coming out of the bullpen ready to go. That didn’t happen.”

Mesa plays New Mexico Highlands in an elimination game at noon today.

Hanks said he hasn’t decided on the starting pitcher, but was leaning toward junior left-hander Garrett Carpenter.
