Former champions advance to Taco Bell final

Jerry Lockwood will go for a Taco Bell Western Slope Open record sixth men’s open singles title against longtime foe Dan MacDonald.

Lockwood, 45, rallied to defeat Colorado Mesa’s No. 1 singles player Brason Hollabaugh 4-6, 6-4, (10-7) in the semifinals at the Elliott Tennis Center at Colorado Mesa University.

“I was lucky,” Lockwood said. “I went with what I had energy to do. If I had energy, I would try to serve and volley. He’s so fast, I didn’t want to rally from the baseline with him.”

This is Lockwood’s 11th final, but only the second time he’s playing a familiar foe in it, he said.

Lockwood defeated MacDonald in the 2008 Western Slope Open men’s open singles final, according to Daily Sentinel records.

MacDonald, 47, defeated Mark Ledebur 6-0, 6-2 in the other semifinal.

Lockwood and MacDonald were semifinalists in the 2011 Western Slope Open.
