Former pro tennis player Taylor Dent coming to GJ in July for clinic

A former professional men’s tennis player is coming to Grand Junction to conduct a camp for children and a clinic for adults this summer.

Taylor Dent will be in Grand Junction July 11-13 to teach technique at the Bookcliff Country Club tennis courts.

Dent, 33, reached a career high singles ranking of No. 21, winning four singles titles on the Association of Tennis Professionals tour. He has defeated players such as former Andy Roddick and Lleyton Hewitt, both former No. 1 players. He also has set the Grand Slam serving records, hitting close to 150 mph.

The adult clinic is from 6:15 to 8:30 p.m. on July 11. It is for adults with a national tennis rating of 3.5 or better.

Adults will receive instruction on doubles strategy, technique and 1-on-1 work for $125. Alcohol and hors d’oeuvres will be served.

The clinic is open for up to 20 adults.

The children’s camp is July 12-13. There will be one group in the morning and one in the evening.

It is open to boys and girls at the intermediate and advanced levels for $250 for one group or $500 for both groups.

The camp is nearly 7½ hours long.

During the camp on Saturday, a raffle drawing will take place with the winner getting a limousine ride with Dent and UFC fighter Nate Marquardt to dinner at a local restaurant.

Marquardt, a cousin of Bookcliff Country Club tennis pro Caleb Marquardt, is fighting in the UFC Main Event on June 28 in Auckland, New Zealand.

Raffle tickets are $3 each and can be purchased throughout the day Saturday. The winner will be announced at 6:30 p.m. with dinner following.

Dent, along with his father and wife, started and run the Dent Tennis Academy near his home in Fountain Valley, California.

Caleb Marquardt, a former Fruita Monument High School state champion, is friends with Dent and played him in the national junior circuit.

The clinic and camp are sponsored by the Winery Restaurant and tennis equipment company Babolat, locally represented by George Tompkins.
