Former Mesa setter to play in Denmark

In the back of her mind, Tara King knew she wanted to keep testing her volleyball skills.

The three-time all-RMAC setter for Mesa State College has signed to play professionally with the Vordingborg Volleyball Klub in Vordingborg, Denmark.

The Steamboat Springs product leaves for Denmark early next month after recording 3,436 career assists, second all-time, at Mesa.

The 5-foot-9 setter was third on the team in blocks last season with nine solo blocks and 44 assists. She signed a contract through April 1, 2012, but could have that extended through postseason play.

King wasn’t ready to stop competing after last season, so she joined the fledgling women’s lacrosse team, even though she had never played the sport before, scoring seven goals in 13 games.

“My senior season at Mesa I felt that I had just started to peak as an athlete, so the thought of being done with competitive volleyball was very hard,” King said in a release issued by the college.

“I have had the dream to play overseas since I was little but never thought it would really happen, so I rarely voiced it. I am very excited to both continue playing, and for the great opportunity to travel.

“I will miss the family I have made at Mesa, with not only my team but also the community, but I feel ready to start my next adventure.”
