Forney in 18th place at state golf

Loren Forney’s first foray in the Class 5A girls state golf championships gave her the low score among Western Slope golfers on Monday.

The Central High School junior shot an 82, putting her in a tie for 18th place after the first round of the 36-hole state championships at Collindale Golf Course in Fort Collins.

Forney’s teammate, Angela Marquez, shot a 90. Jazmin Lee of Central had a 93.

That gave the Warriors a 265 team total, good for sixth place.

Grand Junction sophomore Jordan Tufly shot a 96 in her first state tournament.

Highlands Ranch took the team lead Monday with a 236, two strokes ahead of Skyline, which defeated Central a week and a half ago in a playoff for the Northern Region title.

Overland’s Somin Lee took the individual lead after the first day. She shot a 71, giving her a two-stroke edge over Libby Avery of Highlands Ranch and Amy Hodgkinson of Skyline.

CLASS 4A

Palisade’s Kendra Collette shot a 101 on the first day at Patty Jewett Golf Course in Colorado Springs, putting her in a tie for 51st place.

The low round from the Western Slope came from regional champion Michelle Stripp of Glenwood Springs, who shot an 85. That put her in a tie for eighth place heading into today’s final round.
