Freeburg pitches Montrose past Fruita
Kyle Freeburg won a pitching duel as Montrose defeated Fruita in the first-round of a U-18 summer baseball tournament Thursday in Rifle.
Freeburg scattered seven hits to prevail over Fruita pitcher Colton Chamberlain, who limited Montrose to three hits, but three Fruita errors proved costly. Case in point, Montrose scored its first run, tying the game 1-1 in the top of the second inning, when Fruita dropped a ball in the outfield.
“They do a good job of punishing you for your mistakes,” Fruita coach Ray McLennan said of Montrose.
Meanwhile, Freeburg and Montrose saddled Fruita with eight runners left on base.
“We just couldn’t get that timely hit,” McLennan said.
Chamberlain threw all seven innings, struck out two, walked two and hit one batter. Chris Cordova and Luke Goodrich led Fruita at the plate, each going 2 for 3. Goodrich singled home Cordova with Fruita’s lone run, which came in the first inning.
Fruita (18-14) plays Delta today in the Rifle tourney, which runs through Saturday.
