Free-heel it over to Powderhorn’s TeleFest

Ever since Rick Borkovic revived the art of telemark skiing during the 1970s at Crested Butte, you’d think “free your heel, free your mind” was some kind of skier’s mantra.

And you would be right.

Telemark skiing, once the refuge of near-Luddites balking at the proliferation of ski lifts into once-pristine terrain, long ago went mainstream with plastic boots, synthetic fabrics and its own particular style of uphill-downhill ski races.

Bring your own free-heel skiing expertise to the festivities this weekend at Powderhorn Resort’s fifth annual TeleFest.

The registration price include lifts, clinics and a party.

Wool knickers not required.

WHAT: The fifth annual Powderhorn Ski Resort TeleFest.

WHERE: On various runs, including the popular Uphill/Downhill race Saturday on Wonderbump.

WHEN: Saturday and Sunday, registration starts 8:30 a.m.

WHO: Events include clinics, free equipment demos, costume contest and apr&233;s ski party with food and door prizes.

HOW: Tickets prices are $30 (includes lift ticket, clinics and party), $20 (clinics) and $10 (party only).
