Fruita boys, Central’s Jerome reach state cross-country meet

It was a laundry list before the season started, but Thursday the Fruita Monument boys cross country team achieved its goal.

The Wildcats placed fourth at the Class 5A Region 3 race, earning them a trip to the state finals next week in Fort Collins.

“They achieved their last goal,” Fruita Monument coach Herb Huskey said. “They kept as a pack and I thought they were as good as the three teams that finished ahead of them.”

Woody Seagren finished 15th overall. The other runners on the team were able to keep in a tight enough pack to send the Wildcats to state. Tyler McDermott finished 20th, Travis Bisbee came in 24th, Jordan Potterton was 30th, James Mauch was 34th and John Zamora was 36th.

It was not as successful a day for the girls. The Wildcats were unable to qualify for state as a team finishing seventh with 168 points. Olivia Daniels placed 20th in 20:38. Kasey Mortensen was 24th in 20:48.

“The girls didn’t run well,” Huskey said. “But there were some very good runners here and it was
tough.”

Central was at the Region 2 meet at Chatfield.

The Warriors’ boys team finished 12th overall with 295 team points. While it was not the overall finish the team was looking for, the Warriors’ David Jerome did qualify for state by running a 16:56 and finishing 12th. Robert Sheetz was the next runner in at 50th, clocking a time of 18:18. Eric Pearson finished 78th at 19:29.

The Warriors’ girls team was led by Cory Swim, who finished at 21:34, which put her at 35th place. Lorien Sheader finished 59th at 23:26. Juliane Warmuth came in 65th at 24:16 with Amberlee Sikes right behind her in 24:17. The team finished 10th with 286.

Grand Junction was at the Region 1 race at the Aurora Sports Park and didn’t quite have the race they were looking for, either.

In a tough region, the Tigers were unable to qualify as a team or anyone individually.

“I am disappointed,” Grand Junction coach Clay Keithley said. “It was a tough regional and if you didn’t get out in the front, it was hard to catch up.”

The Tigers finished ninth in the boys race, led by Wyatt Colloty, who came in 26th in 18:26. Kevin Martin was 41st in 19:03 and Levi Hamer finished 46th in 19:14. Kelsey Slauson was the top runner for the girls.

The Fruita Monument boys along with Jerome will be racing Saturday at Fossil Ridge High School in the state finals.
