Fruita, Central to battle for baseball title

Fruita and Central’s U-18 summer baseball teams will play today for the title in the Best of the West Warrior Classic tournament.

The Wildcats got a dominant pitching performance Saturday from Colton Chamberlain to shut out Montrose 10-0 in five innings, with Central holding off Palisade 4-3 to win their respective pools.

Chamberlain struck out three and didn’t walk a batter, allowing three hits for the Wildcats. Only one Montrose runner reached third base against Chamberlain, who faced only 19 hitters in five innings.

Fruita took a 5-0 lead after three innings and put the game away with two more in the fourth and three in the fifth. Chris Cordova and Dylan Row drove in two runs each, and Cody Basinger added an RBI triple. Row and Conner Harmon each doubled.

The title game of the eight-team tournament is at 4:30 today at Central High School.
