Fruita cruises past Cheyenne Mountain

The Fruita U-18 summer baseball team defeated Cheyenne Mountain 12-3 at the Best of the West Warrior Classic on Friday.

Fruita got on top early with five runs in the second inning, highlighted by Cody Basinger’s three-run home run. Fruita coach Ray McLennan added the outburst was ignited by back-to-back hits from Grant Stagg and James Stagg. From there, Fruita peppered Indians pitcher Nic Locayo for 14 hits.

Fruita’s Jacob Worth scattered five hits over five innings without a strikeout and gave up only one earned run.

Grant Stagg went 4 for 5 with a double and two RBI.

“We had a big second inning that really created a spark for us,” McLennan said. “We were able to put pressure on them. They had a good pitcher with a nice fastball and curveball. We just had a nice approach today and were able to hit the ball hard.”
