Fruita finishes off trip to Farmington, N.M., with a win

The Fruita U18 summer baseball team rebounded from a morning loss to close The High School Weekend tournament in Farmington, N.M., with a victory Sunday.

Valencia beat Fruita 7-4 to start the day, scoring four runs in the first inning. After Fruita scored two runs in the third to pull within 4-3, Valencia responded with two runs in the bottom of the frame to reclaim control.

Cuba Bess hit two doubles and drove in a run for Fruita, and Chad Goodrich joined him with two hits as Fruita finished with 10.

Fruita got good pitching to go with its offense in the second game as it beat Valley High School of Albuquerque, N.M., 8-1.

Starting pitcher Devon Canup threw a scoreless first four innings, scattering five hits, and Max McLean tossed the final three innings, surrendering one run but no hits.

Bess led Fruita’s 12-hit attack with three hits, while Goodrich, Sam Graf and Cody Basinger each collected two hits. Basinger hit a triple, while Goodrich and Graff each had a double. Graff drove in three runs.

Fruita finished the three-day tournament with a 3-2 record and is 17-9 overall.
