Fruita tops Durango in lacrosse

Lindsey Burneheide scored seven goals as the Fruita Monument High School lacrosse team defeated Durango, 9-5, on Saturday.

Host Fruita (3-4) had 22 shots on goal and outscored Durango 4-1 in the second half.

Kiani Vogt and Lauren Sullivan also had a goal for the Wildcats.

Aspen 11, Grand Junction 9: The Tigers rallied from 9-3 down at halftime to nearly defeat Aspen.

Emma LeFebre and Kacie Jay had three goals apiece for the Tigers (4-1), who outscored Aspen (5-0) 6-2 in the second half.


Despite outshooting Montezuma-Cortez, 16-4, Palisade lost 1-0.

Allison Parker scored the game’s only goal for Cortez.

Palisade (2-3) gave up the game-winning goal in the 66th minute.

Fruita Monument 2, Falcon 1: Visiting Fruita Monument (6-2) had nine shots on goal in a win over Falcon. Katie Benton and Courtney Coffee each had a goal, and Benton added an assist.

“We controlled the game from the first touch,” coach Eric Anderson said. “We hit the cross bar five times. We played fairly well and it felt good to get the win when the girls have played three games in three days.”


Central had numerous first-place finishers in the Delta Invitational — Katie Murphy (No. 3 singles), Hannah Keeling and Emma Beckstead (No. 1 doubles), Keira Trujillo and Sara Clow (No. 2 doubles), Bryce Lambert and Claudia Montano (No. 3 doubles), and Deedee Romo and Stacey Barragan (No. 4 doubles).

Also, Keeling and Beckstead won the best double team award for the tournament.


The District 51 Griffins won the Griffins triangular at the El Pomar Natatorium.

The Griffins, with 640 points,  defeated Durango (400) and Glenwood Springs (254).

Tyler Fair set a Class 5A state-qualifying time of 1:04.15 in the 100-yard breaststroke for the Griffins.
