Fruita wins pair in Rifle tourney
Fruita won a pair of baseball games Friday in the Rifle U-18 Tournament, defeating Prairie View 4-1, then routing Glenwood Springs 17-0.
Kale Smith was the winning pitcher against Prairie View, getting all of the run support he needed in Fruita’s three-run first inning. Logan McLennan and Conner Cronkhite each hit doubles as Fruita collected five hits total.
Fruita had 13 hits, including six for extra bases, in its win over Glenwood Springs, while Ned Smith picked up the win on the mound, scattering six hits. Fruita scored five runs in the third inning and five more in the fourth.
Fruita’s Keenan Duran hit a triple, while Cronkhite, Cody Basinger, Casey Mays, Kelin Henke and Luke Goodrich all had doubles.
Fruita is 21-11 overall and 2-1 in the tournament. Fruita can place second with a win today over Rifle in its final game of the tourney.
Gene Taylor’s Legion
Gene Taylor’s American Legion team fell behind 5-0, then rallied for four runs in the fifth inning, but it fell short, losing 6-4 to the Legacy Longhorns in the Danny Hughes Memorial Tournament in Las Vegas.
Two runs scored on an error, followed by Drew Bridges’ run-scoring double and Owen Taylor’s run-scoring sacrifice fly in the fifth for Gene Taylor’s, which finished the game with nine hits.
Josh Moore pitched a complete game but suffered the loss. He allowed nine hits, walked one and struck out five. Gene Taylor’s committed four errors.
The four-day tourney resumes today.
