Fruita’s Dangler, Speer reach 5A state golf tourney

Fruita Monument’s Troy Dangler is making a return trip to the Class 5A state boys golf tournament, and first-year varsity player Brandon Speer is joining him.

Dangler, a sophomore, placed ninth with an 8-over-par 79 on Friday in the Southern Regional at the Colorado Springs Country Club.

“Troy was consistent all year,” Fruita coach Dave Fox said.

Speer, a junior, finished 14th with an 82.

“(Speer) started slow and was sick early in the year,” Fox said. “He’s put his game together at the right time.”

Fruita Monument placed eighth with a team score of 254. Cherry Creek won the team title with a 226, and Fossil Ridge took second at 232 as they claimed the automatic team berths to state.
