Fruita’s Sinner finishes fourth on regional golf course
Jessica Sinner of Fruita Monument High School fired a 77 on Wednesday to place fourth in the Mountain Range Invitational girls golf tournament at Riverdale Knolls in Brighton.
The Wildcats, Central and Grand Junction all played in the tournament to get a look at the Class 5A regional course.
Fruita placed fifth as a team at 261, with Central seventh at 269 and Grand Junction 10th at 277.
The Warriors’ Brittany Hoppe shot an 87.
Lindsey Burneheide scored eight goals to lead Fruita Monument to a 16-13 victory at Summit.
The Wildcats, who led 10-7 at halftime, got three goals from Alyssa Urban, two from Nicole Twardowski and one each from Naomi Neuville, Clay Campbell and Lauren Sullivan.
Fruita goalie Courtney Petek made a dozen saves.
Fruita Monument won all but the No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles matches for a 5-2 victory over Central.
Central’s Aimee Basinski continued to play well coming back from an ankle injury early this spring, defeating Grace Gaglione 6-3, 6-1 at No. 1 singles, and the Warriors’ Hannah Keeling and Emma Beckstead won a tough three-set match against Bronte Hayward and Laren Cyphers, 4-6, 6-2, 7-6.
Meredith Soychak and Sierra Segrest won at No. 2 and No. 3 singles, respectively, for the Wildcats (5-1) and Fruita’s other three doubles teams won, including the No. 2 duo of Jacque Soychak and McKenna Griffiths, in a three-setter over Sarah Clow and Keira Truijllo, 6-4, 0-6, 6-3.
