Fruita’s Sinner wins Palisade Invitational

Fruita Monument High School’s Jessica Sinner shot an 81 Tuesday to win the Palisade Invitational at Lincoln Park.

Central won the team title, however, with 262 points.

Fruita Monument was second with 265.

For Central, Sarah Robbins shot an 83, and Kate Schuman and Brittany Hoppe tied for third, shooting 86s.

Sinner distanced herself from the competition on hole No. 16, a 150-yard par-3. Using an 8-iron, Sinner teed off and put the ball within six feet of the cup.

She birdied the hole despite fatigue from the previous holes.

“I just had to slow my swing down,” Sinner said, “and use my legs.”

Hoppe, meanwhile, improved by six strokes on her back nine.

“One the first nine,” Hoppe said, “my driver was giving me trouble.”

Schuman, meanwhile, enjoyed playing on a calm day, a stark contract to the gusty conditions on Monday during the Fruita Monument Invitational at Adobe Creek.

She tied her score of 86 from Monday, although the course at Lincoln was significantly longer.

“This was kind of a nice break from the usual golf weather,” Schuman said. “It’s usually so cold or windy.”

Durango 3, Palisade 0: Host Palisade (2-2) allowed goals to Durango’s Raquel Delgado, Brooke Milliet and Steffie Wilson.
