Game-ending sacrifice fly lifts Fruita past Montrose
Logan McLennan’s walk-off sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth inning plated Dylan Row with the winning run as the Fruita Wildcats defeated Montrose 8-7 in the Best of the West U-18 baseball tournament Friday at Canyonview Park.
Winning pitcher Colton Chamberlain threw the final four innings in relief of Kale Smith, who pitched the first four.
Cody Basinger went 3 for 5 with a triple, and Casey Mays hit a double to pace Fruita’s 10-hit attack.
The Wildcats (11-5) continue play in the tourney today against the Central Warriors.
The Gene Taylor’s American Legion baseball team dropped a pair of games Friday in Pueblo, surrendering five runs in the fifth inning and four runs in the seventh inning of each game.
The Elk City Travelers bested Gene Taylor’s 12-8.
Drew Bridges hit two home runs and drove in six runs for Gene Taylor’s, and he and Zach Lebsock each went 2 for 3. Brett Labonte started and went 4 2/3 innings, taking the loss.
Durango Post 76 rallied from a 6-2 deficit to defeat Gene Taylor’s 11-6.
Marcus Wirth went 2 for 2 and drove in a run for Gene Taylor’s (4-5), and Labonte doubled.
Stephen Baldwin suffered the loss, pitching the first five innings.
