Gene Taylor’s advances to Legion A state title game

Owen Taylor hit a three-run home run in the fifth inning Saturday as Gene Taylor’s defeated the Greeley Gojos 10-7 in a Legion A state semifinal in Boulder.

Gene Taylor’s advanced to the championship games today and must win two games — either twice against Rocky Mountain or over Rocky Mountain and Boulder — to be the state champion.

Taylor’s home run put Gene Taylor’s ahead, 6-4.

“Taylor’s home run, in the end, really was the game-changer,” Gene Taylor’s coach Dave Jahnke said.

Tyler Gastineau made it back-to-back home runs, ripping a shot to left-center field that Jahnke said hit off a light pole some 90 feet in the air.

Tate Herland went six innings for Gene Taylor’s, giving up four earned runs and Walker Williams picked up the save, striking out four and allowing three hits and one earned run in three innings.

“When you bring Walker in for relief,” Jahnke said, “you know what you’re getting.”

Gene Taylor’s (21-19), which did not have a team from 1991-2007, is playing in the championships for the first time since 1988, according to Jahnke.
