Gene Taylor’‘s moves into final four at Reno tourney

Two more wins Saturday in Reno, Nev., ran the Gene Taylor’s American Legion baseball team’s record to 5-0 in pool play and put it in the final four of the Reno Muckdogs 4th of July Tournament today.

Gene Taylor’s beat Team APS 16-6 in five innings, with seven of those runs coming in the top of the fourth.

Casey Burns and Drew Bridges each went 2 for 3 with a home run, and Bridges added a double to Gene Taylor’s 13-hit attack. Brett Labonte went 3 for 3 with two runs, and Tanner Denton and Marcus Wirth added two hits apiece. Wirth drove in four runs, including three on a double in the third inning.

Stephen Baldwin pitched the first three innings for the victory, allowing one run on two hits, striking out four and walking one.

Gene Taylor’s (11-6) concluded pool play with an 8-1 victory over Redwood City in seven innings, riding the arm of Walker Williams, who went the distance on the mound.

Williams scattered seven hits, walked one and struck out two. He surrendered Redwood City’s run in the fourth, after the Gene Taylor’s hitters staked him to a 7-0 lead.

Bridges and Zach Lebsock each collected three of Gene Taylor’s 12 hits, and each hit a double. Lebsock’s double plated a run in the first, and he singled home two runs in the four-run second inning. Burns and Wirth had two hits apiece, with Burns pushing across three runs and Wirth scoring three times.

Gene Taylor’s will play either NorCal Valley or the Santa Cruz Seals in an 11:30 a.m. semifinal today.

In its past six games, Gene Taylor’s is hitting . 420 as a team with 18 doubles and 70 runs.
