Gene Taylor’s settles for second at Cherry Creek Classic
Gene Taylor’s reached the championship game of the Cherry Creek Classic American Legion baseball tournament Sunday before suffering its first loss of the season. The Billings Scarlets beat Gene Taylor’s 12-0 in five innings for the title.
Gene Taylor’s (5-1) was limited to two hits, one of them a double by Owen Taylor.
The Scarlets scored in every inning, including four runs in the fourth.
Gene Taylor’s won a semifinal earlier Sunday, rallying from a 2-0 deficit through four-and-a-half innings to beat the Cherry Creek 17s 5-2.
Winning pitcher Walker Williams threw a complete game, allowing two unearned runs in the first inning, then blanking Cherry Creek for the next six. Williams allowed three hits, walked one and struck out nine.
Taylor hit a home run and drove in three runs. He also doubled and was joined by Caden Woods, Cameron Campbell and Zane Abeyta with two hits as Gene Taylor’s collected 11 hits.
Gene Taylor’s scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth to take the lead, then added a run in the sixth to conclude the scoring.
