GJ, Fruita, Central make softball playoffs

Southwestern League champion Grand Junction received the highest seed of three SWL teams to qualify for the Class 5A softball playoffs.

Being seeded No. 13, though, wasn’t high enough to get the Tigers a host spot. Grand Junction (15-4) travels to Fort Collins to play Columbine (11-8) at Fossil Ridge High School at 10 a.m. Saturday.

Central (12-7) is seeded 25th and travels to Brighton High School (18-1) and open Region 3 play against the host school. No. 28 Fruita Monument (11-8) will face host Dakota Ridge (16-3). Two teams from each of eight regions in Class 5A and Class 4A advance to the state tournament.

In Class 4A, Montrose (14-5) is seeded 17th and opens against Palmer Ridge (13-6) in Region 1 at Wheat Ridge. No. 27 Delta (15-4) opens against host Broomfield (12-6) in Region 6.

Eighth-seeded Basalt (14-4) will host the Class 3A Region 5 and play No. 17 Faith Christian (6-12). Cedaredge (14-5), seeded 15th, travels to Broomfield to play Rocky Ford (6-13).
