GJ Rockies fall to Chukars

Grand Junction failed to make up ground Wednesday on Ogden in the race for the second-half title in the South Division of the Pioneer League, losing 6-4 at Idaho Falls.

Ogden lost 5-1 to Orem, and the Rockies could have moved within two games of the lead, tied with Orem, with a win.

Instead, the Chukars scored two runs in each of the second, third and fourth innings off Jorge Oviedo to erase Grand Junction’s 2-0 lead on Jeff Moberg’s two-run home run. With two out in the top of the eighth, Chad Spanberger walked and Todd Czinege doubled to right to put the tying run on second, but Ramon Marcelino lined out to center.

Joey Bartosic tripled and scored in the fifth and Kennard McDowell doubled, took third on a wild pitch in the seventh and scored on Bartosic’s single, his third in four at-bats. Bartosic, the only Rockies player with more than one hit, finished a home run shy of the cycle.

With the loss, Grand Junction (34-32, 16-12 second half) is three games behind Ogden with 10 games remaining in the season. Five of those games will be against the Raptors.
