GJ Rockies’ hit machine Tapia selected as Pioneer League’s player of month for July
Raimel Tapia played in 25 of the Grand Junction Rockies’ 28 games in July.
The 19-year-old outfielder had at least one hit in every game, 43 in all. He put together a club-record 29-game hitting streak, three shy of tying the Pioneer League record, starting in late June and rolling into August.
His hitting streak started with a seventh-inning single on June 28, the ninth game of the season. It didn’t end until the 41st game, Aug. 2, when he went 0 for 4 at Orem in the Rockies’ 4-3, 10-inning win.
His .417 average for the month earned him the Topps Pioneer League player of the month award for July.
Entering Tuesday night’s game at Missoula, Tapia leads the Pioneer League with a .370 average and 64 hits. Tapia, who signed with the Colorado Rockies as a free agent in 2010, leads Grand Junction in games played, 44 of 50.
He has 19 multiple-hit games, 14 with two hits, and he is the only Grand Junction player to collect five hits in a game this season. That came July 10 at home, when the Rockies’ center fielder hit leadoff, and he got the club on the board with a first-inning home run in Grand Junction’s 10-6 win over Billings.
Tapia, from San Pedro de Macoris, Dominican Republic, finished the game 5 for 5 with three doubles, one home run and five RBI in the Rockies’ 17-hit attack.
Tapia hit three of his four home runs in July and drove in 23 of his 34 RBI.
In the Class A South Atlantic League, Asheville shortstop Rosell Herrera, won the award for the second time this season. Herrera, 20, from Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, hit .391 with 36 hits, 13 for extra bases.
