GJ Rockies’ pitchers take a beating in loss

Grand Junction Rockies pitchers gave up 14 hits and put 22 runners on base in a 12-2 loss to the Orem Owlz in Pioneer League baseball on Sunday in Orem, Utah.

Eddie Butler started and went three innings for the Rockies, allowing five hits and four earned runs.

“I told the guys we were outplayed in both phases of the game,” Rockies manager Tony Diaz said. “That’s going to happen sometimes. You put it behind you, shower well and we’ll get ready for another day.”

Ryan Warner, an 18-year-old Pine Creek High School (Colorado Springs)  graduate, replaced Butler and gave up seven hits and six runs — including two home runs — in 2 1/3 innings pitched.

And yet, Diaz was impressed with the teenager.

“The fact that he got hit and he stayed after it and didn’t show any negative emotions on the mound,” Diaz said. “That type of body language makes that kid a special pitcher. I was impressed.”

The Rockies (6-8) put the lead-off hitter on base in all but the ninth inning, a scoreless inning tossed by Raul Fernandez.

Here’s how the Rockies pitchers fared against Owlz (5-10) lead-off hitters each inning: Walk, walk, single, walk, home run, double, walk, ground out.

But the Rockies didn’t leave without another impressive night by first-round pick David Dahl. In the top of the third inning, Dahl launched the first home run of his professional career with a shot to left field.

In doing so, Dahl extended his hitting streak to 10 games.

Colorado Mesa University’s Jeffrey Popick went 1 for 2 and is hitting .400. ... Rockies right fielder Julian Yan went 0 for 3, ending his eight-gwame hitting streak. ... The Rockies next home stand begins Tuesday, hosting Orem at 7:05 p.m. The Suplizio Field box office will open at 3 p.m., and the gates will open 5 p.m. Tuesday.

For Wednesday’s 6:30 p.m. game against Orem, the box office will open at noon and the gates at 4:30 p.m.
