GJ Rockies’ trio fare well for
Pioneer League in All-Star Game

Grand Junction’s middle infield All-Stars helped trigger the Pioneer League’s four-run second inning Tuesday night, but the Northwest League rallied with five runs in the fifth inning to win the third annual Pioneer League-Northwest League All-Star Game 5-4.

Shortstop Ryan Vilade singled and scored the second run of the inning, and second baseman Shael Mendoza singled in one run for a 3-0 lead. The Pioneer League’s stolen base leader then swiped second and third base and scored on Idaho Falls outfielder Amalani Fukofuka’s base hit to make it 4-0.

Michael Agis, the Rockies’ reliable reliever, threw a perfect eighth inning to keep the Pioneer League within one run after the Northwest League sent 11 men to the plate and scored five runs in the fifth. The All-Stars from the Rookie affiliates put two runners on with two out in the ninth but a line drive to first base was caught by a diving Gustavo Polanco of Emerald to end the game.

Mendoza, who hit leadoff for the Pioneer League, finished 1 for 3, scored one run and drove in one, with two stolen bases. Vilade was 1 for 2 and scored one run.

The Rockies resume play against Helena on Thursday at Suplizio Field.
