GJ Rockies win thriller
Ryan McMahon hit a home run in his fourth straight game Friday night, but this one might have been the most dramatic.
The Grand Junction Rockies’ third baseman blasted a three-run shot to right field with two out in the top of the ninth inning, breaking a 4-4 tie and propelling the Rockies to a 7-4 victory over the Orem Owlz.
The home run capped Grand Junction’s six-run ninth inning. Carlos Yan retired the Owlz in order in the ninth, striking out the final two batters, for his second save of the season.
Jairo Rosario opened the top of the ninth with a base hit. With one out, Robbie Perkins doubled home Rosario, and then scored on a double by Dom Nunez. Terry McClure singled and advanced to second on the throw to third, which Nunez beat.
Cesar Galvez scored Nunez with a sacrifice fly to center, with McClure taking third, and Van Eaton intentionally walked Raimel Tapia. McMahon followed with his 11th home run.
Pitching coach Ryan Kibler announced his pitching rotation for the playoffs, with Devin Burke starting Game 1 at 7:15 p.m. Monday at Idaho Falls. Zach Jemiola will pitch Game 2 at 7:05 p.m. on Tuesday at Suplizio Field, with Blake Shouse starting in Game 3 on Wednesday night, if necessary.
