GJ softball team gets one win at tourney

The Grand Junction High softball team won one of three nonleague games in Fort Collins on Friday.

The Tigers (2-3) got three hits and four RBI from Haeleigh Harris to lead the Tigers to a 21-0 win over Standley Lake in the Fort Collins tournament.

Grace Ooley and Jordyn Stephenson added three RBI each.

Hannah Hutto pitched four innings and struck out six for the Tigers

Grand Junction went on to lose to Fort Collins, 13-5, and 11-1 to Fossil Ridge.

ThunderRidge 13, Fruita Monument 3: The Wildcats lost their season opener at Bergman Field in five innings after giving up eight runs in fourth and fifth innings to blow open a close game.


Rifle 34, Basalt 14: On the first play from scrimmage, the Bears’ Tanner Vines raced 64 yards for a touchdown. Rifle took a 20-7 lead at halftime, thanks to a strong running game. Tyler Warfel and Brandon Fletchall scored on short runs, and quarterback Luke Ellis added two 1-yard TD runs in the win.

Meeker 40, Highland 0: The Cowboys, the Class 1A state runner-up in 2016, took a 34-0 lead at the half and cruised to the win.

Centauri 20: Paonia 13, Centauri rallied for the win with a late fourth-quarter score. Paonia’s Jaden Miller scored a TD in the third quarter to give the Eagles a 10-6 lead. Paonia added a field goal about midway though the fourth to take a 13-12 lead before Centauri’s game-winning score.


Fruita Monument 3, Battle Mountain 0: The Wildcats opened their season with a strong showing in getting a straight set win. With eight seniors on the roster, the Wildcats rallied to win the first game,
25-22, then eased to a 25-15 win in the second before wrapping up the victory with a 25-19 win.
